Chapelgarth Gallery
Today is #Internationalstudentsday - Here at Chapelgarth we celebrate international #PHD students every day by welcoming them into our community of writers, supporting them along their #PhDjourney every step of the way. Built in 1909, Chapelgarth, nestled in the English countryside, cultivated #globalconnections from its early beginnings through the imperial networks of the couple who built the house. Today our #writingroom hosts many scholars from the Commonwealth and beyond whose #postcolonial writings shape the way we now see the world. ๐
We are having a quiet October month, with writing retreats resuming in November for #acwrimo - no bad thing taking a breather- we will have more energy for the coming months! But Tiggy is desolate! Wondering where everyone is.. this is her usual observation point to catch a glimpse of our writers minibus! It won’t be long, Tiggy! ๐ป
Last #writingretreat of this academic year - #feedback time was once again a time to celebrate common achievements but more importantly a time for me to witness the transformative power of our #writingretreats. Our WritingCommunity is made up of academics who are #supportive+ #empathic towards one another. At a time when universities are increasingly squeezed, and academics are under tremendous pressures, #wellbeinginacademia happens here. Thank you to all those who have reminded me of the value of what we do here. It means a lot ๐.
July Focus on Dr Emily Aradi, Manchester University #womeninstem -Thanks to @sophielnixon and #laurarichards for co-hosting the latest workshop+#writingretreat and introducing me to so many incredible, interesting women. Emily’s story blew my mind- from a small town in Kenya, within a loving and supportive family, Emily pursued her HE in #southafrica obtaining a PhD in physics. She was a lecturer at University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), a research fellow at the University of Huddersfield and is now a #postdoc at #manchesteruniversity where her research focuses on #nuclearwaste ๐ฒ. As if this wasn’t enough, Emily is also a mum of two and a truly wonderful person. Unforgettable and fascinating chats on our walk - talking about Kenya, politics and the amazing women who are now emerging in civic society. How lucky am I to get to meet such incredible people? #womenempowerment #womensupportingwomen #womeninleadership
Thank you Dani - one of the fabulous #phdstudents from our latest #five-day #writingretreat - for capturing on #tiktok the happy atmosphere of the latest retreat at Chapelgarth! You can see the whole reel here https://www.tiktok.com/@littleredflyer/video/7364864385463979296?_t=8m39uJA72R7&_r=1 Honestly this group blew me away!
Our #suffragettes suite is always one of the favourites with our #female-academics - The name of this bedroom brings a smile to their faces ๐ - It was first named so by the Dixons - the Edwardian couple who built the house - since Lilian, the lady of the house, chose to decorate the room in the ‘suffragettes’ colours . @mrs_zbd
More than proud to have facilitated multiple writing retreats attended by @emma_ormerod who has been awarded best paper 2023 in Regional Studies - Urban and Regional Horizons, for the paper: ‘Level with us, regional development is still ‘man shaped’: feminism, futurity and leadership’. The award was presented by Editor John Harrison, on behalf of the editorial board who recognised this paper as ‘agenda setting and stimulating new thinking and novel approaches’:
The paper argues that regional development is ‘man-shaped’. This article calls for more engagement with the feminist concept of futurity by bringing together and troubling masculine-coded understandings of regional development, leadership and power over time and space. It argues that continuing to neglect feminist politics and practices in regional studies stifles conceptual and practical advances in subnational development. Drawing on the example of the UK at a time the government seeks to ‘level-up’ longstanding geographical inequalities, the article highlights and troubles the construction of a masculine gaze of development over time, and how this limits the becoming of ‘otherwise’ regional futures. #levellingup #feministfutures #feministgeographies
