About Us

Dr Marcella Sutcliffe


Marcella is Programme Manager at WRC where she runs and facilitates residential writing retreats for academics all year round.



Marcella is a nineteenth-century historian. Having obtained her PhD at Newcastle University she went on to pursue her postdoctoral studies and research at the University of Cambridge and at UCL (Institute of Education). She was an award-holder at the British School at Rome, where her residency provided inspiration for the academic writing retreats she now leads.


Ms Chanel Tchoula


Chanel joined the team in January 2024. She is responsible for the administrative





The Dixons



Clive Dixon, an eccentric and talented artist, built Chapelgarth in 1909 according to the Edwardian parameters of an English country house, with plenty of room for his six children and servants' quarters. He enjoyed dressing up and parading, regularly taking part in medieval pageantry re enactments. Clive joined the war in 1914 and was killed in action only months later.
